Cooking Recipes Cards

Hello year 1,

Mrs Roberts has created a variety of cooking activities that you might want to do with your adults at home. These are a combination of mains, snacks and desserts but are really easy to follow and create if you have the ingredients and want to try them at home.

Please take pictures and email them to us as so we can share them with your friends. We are really enjoying hearing and seeing what you have been getting up to.

Have fun and Happy Cooking

Keep the photographs coming

Reading Challange

Reading Challenge

Teachers across school have been reading stories for you to enjoy, but we have also been enjoying reading our own books in our spare time.

We would love to see how you have been keeping up with those reads! As a reading activity for this week, we would like you to do one of the following. If you are super motivated, you could choose more than one!

  • Ask a grown up to film you reading part of your favourite book and send it to year1@hilltop.doncaster.sch.uk
  • Be the teacher- you could write your own comprehension questions about a book and ask someone else to answer them.
  • Be dramatic- you could act out different books and see if anybody can guess the book you have chosen.

Remember to keep reading at least 3 times a week
Well done Year 1

Email address

Hi Parents,
I am having a wonderful time speaking to all the Wise Owls today.  If I don't get a chance to speak to you today, then I promise I will call tomorrow.  One thing that parents have asked is for the school e-mail as they were unsure about where to send the fabulous home-learning pictures.  I am so excited about receiving them as it sounds like the children are having such a fantastic time.  I've heard of bike rides, trips to the woods, camping out under the stars, painting flowers on sheds and so many more wonderful experiences.  Please send as many pictures as you can to the following email:
year1@hilltop.doncaster.sch.uk
Myself and Mrs Hodgson will look forward to sharing them on the blog!

Summer Term - Topic (Superheroes)

Hello Children,
Welcome back to another week of fantastic Home-learning.  This week we are going to start our new topic on Superheroes.  Myself and Mrs Hodgson have heard that there are some superheroes visiting Edlington!  We are just disappointed that we haven't seen any!  We have heard that Spiderman has been on his rounds and is even handing out sweeties!  Also, we've heard that the postman has been dressing up in different characters too!  How wonderful for you and what lovely community spirit!

I am extremely impressed that one of the superheroes shared a story that I read to you two weeks ago!  Of course we also have our real-life superheroes who are working so hard at this time - The NHS and all the other key workers.

This week we would like you to...
*  Design your own superhero
*  Describe a hero that is a keyworker
*  Write a letter to a key worker of your choice
*  Draw a superhero of your choice and label their characteristics
*  Design a thank you poster for any key worker and put it in your window for Thursday, when we applaud the key workers.

Please remember to e-mail your home-learning so that we can share it on the blog on Friday!
Have Fun Year 1 xx

Friday 1st May Descriptive Writing

Friday 1st May - Descriptive Writing.

Todays learning is all about you using all you have learnt this week from your reading of the text and other activities to write some amazing descriptive sentences about the seasons. There are four seasons, it is up to you if you choose to do one, two, three or ALL four.
The important thing to remember when writing your sentences is to ensure you are extending them using your conjunctions and adding extra detail through including some good adjectives.

Hope you enjoy.

Extended Sentences

Maybe when you are on your daily walk you can have a look at some of the plants that are growing around Edlington. You could also complete the seasons wheel below either drawing or writing key words in each of the sections.

Tuesday 28th April - Shared Reading

Following on from yesterdays reading comprehension today I would like you to share the text 'Seren's Season' to or with your grown up, remember to apply your phonic knowledge to unfamiliar words.

Serens' Powerpoint

After you have read the story you will then need to print out the activity mats and clothes to dress Seren for each of the seasons. Remember to be careful with your scissors. To extend your learning write a sentence underneath each of the completed seasons explaining what Seren will need to wear.

Monday 27th April - Seasons Comprehension

Monday 27th April - Reading
The programmes of study for reading at key stages 1 and 2 consist of 2 dimensions:
- word reading
- comprehension (both listening and reading)
It is essential that teaching focuses on developing pupils’ competence in both dimensions; different kinds of teaching are needed for each.
Skilled word reading involves both the speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Underpinning both is the understanding that the letters on the page represent the sounds in spoken words. This is why phonics should be emphasised in the early teaching of reading to beginners (ie unskilled readers) when they start school.
Good comprehension draws from linguistic knowledge (in particular of vocabulary and grammar) and on knowledge of the world. Comprehension skills develop through pupils’ experience of high-quality discussion with the teacher, as well as from reading and discussing a range of stories, poems and non-fiction. All pupils must be encouraged to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world they live in, to establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum. Reading widely and often increases pupils’ vocabulary because they encounter words they would rarely hear or use in everyday speech. Reading also feeds pupils’ imagination and opens up a treasure house of wonder and joy for curious young minds.

This weeks reading is linked to our science topic of 'Seasons'.  Use the link below:-

A message from Mrs Hayes

A special message from Mrs Hayes who is missing you all very much.

A message from Mrs Hayes

"We have created our own little family in school and thank everyone for keeping us safe."

Hello Year 1,

We hope you are staying safe and well. We thought we would share with you some of the exciting things that our lovely children have been up to this week with Mrs Roberts, Miss Wilcox and Mrs Shaw, in case you wanted to try out any of them!

1. Building masks from cardboard and paint.
2. Making balloon models using modelling balloons and you tube tutorial,
3. Making hugs to send to someone who needs one.
(Mrs Roberts sent one to Mrs Rodgers and Miss Wilcox sent one to Miss Hanson) Even grown ups need a hug sending!

4. Made a rainbow of hands which we have displayed in the hall window for you to see when you enter via the hall doors,

5. Playing on the gym equipment and shark attack.

6. Today we had our very own sports day with everyone receiving a certificate and an ice pop in the sun.

“We have created our own little family in school and thank everyone for keeping us safe.”

Are the words that have been shared this week.

Our weekly learners - The Wise Owls

Hello Wise Owls

I just want to say I am missing you all terribly and I am in school on Monday and Tuesday next week so I will be calling you all to have a little catch up!  I can't wait for that! I am sure that you are all working super hard for your grown ups and I am excited to see what you have been up to.  I wonder if any of you have put one of those dances together - I would love to see those!  You know how much we all love dancing.

Grown ups - If you would like to share the children's photos of their learning or just a photo of them enjoying the lovely sunshine, then please email them to me via the year1 email and state that the photo can be shared on the blog. The children will undoubtedly enjoy looking at some what their friends have been doing and this is a great way of sharing each others learning ideas.

Here are a few things that I have had sent in this week...

Joe has done some amazing learning.  He wrote some very interesting facts about giraffes and also did some superstar maths learning!  Well done Joe!
Isaac has done some fantastic agility moves!  His Mummy made him an obstacle course in the house and he had great fun jumping across the different pieces of furniture - I hope he didn't break anything!  Well done Isaac!

Gracie has been having fun with the face paints and looks beautiful as a ladybird.

Let's see who can have a mention next Friday!  Keep sending in your photographs - it is really lovely to see your wonderful smiley faces!
I miss you all! Lots of love Mrs Clark xx
PS - I hope you all listen to mine and Mrs Hodgson's new stories tonight or over the weekend.  They are very funny!  Stay safe everyone!

Looks like Amelia has been having fun with the face paints this week.

I have also received a wonderful letter from Campbell telling me all the things he has been busy doing at home. Here is a photo of the amazing spider biscuits he made with his brother Ewan and his mummy.
